SUSTAINABLE CINEMA: KINETIC SCULPTURES

Work in Progress, Steel, Plastic; 1.2 meters high

NO 2: RICKSHAW CINEMA
The crudely chopped and modified bikes seen throughout Southeast Asia combine found metals, recycled wood, concrete and other cheap materials to create a hybrid 'hack' that assists a struggling family to better their lives. This sculpture celebrates the folk beauty, ingenuity and compelling history of these machines as well as references a type of early cinema throughout Malaysia and Singapore where mobile 'theatres' on the back of rickshaws and pickup trucks traveled among villages as a strange reversal of the western 'drive-in' theatre…here, the theatres drove to the audience.
