In 2007, Scott Hessels led a documentary expedition of Singapore film students into Yunnan Province to make films about two preservation projects by the China Exploration and Research Society. CERS has been working to preserve the wetlands of the Black-Necked Cranes and has created a high-altitude kennel to breed the endangered Tibetan Mastiffs.

Sacred Crane, Mortal Birds

Upon the remote Tibetan plateau of mystical Shangri-La treads the black-necked crane--a species revered by native Tibetans for centuries. The survival of these cranes dwindles as the local engage in their own economic activities. This film shows how the local deal with this struggle between sustaining the survival of these birds and their own livelihood.

The Tibetan Mastiffs

A filmmaking expedition across national boundaries. A glimpse of life in the Tibetan plateau, and for the first time, come close to understanding the ways of the mysterious guardians of the east.
